A shared bathroom could mean there is one bathroom shared between two hotel rooms, each room would have a door going into it and the doors can be locked so that each person can have privacy, and also one would not be able to go into the other person's hotel room. Another meaning of shared bathroom could mean the bathroom is located in the hallway and may be shared by many other guests.
A 'shared bathroom' means that other guests use the bathroom as well as you. In my experience, most private bathrooms are outside guest rooms. You need to go into the corridor to get to them.
A 'private bathroom' is also usually outside your room but is only used by you.
Sometimes 'private bathroom' is used for a bathroom which is has a door inside your room, although that is more commonly known as an 'en suite'.

You may encounter "lower class" hotels, with rooms only, usually with a sink, and toilets / bathroom on each floor. Like in the old days...

Yes, but you also find shared bathrooms in B&Bs that are located in historic houses. It doesn't mean they're lower class, just that the structure of the house didn't allow room for ensuite bathrooms in each room. It is less convenient, though...

We once stayed in a B&B that had a shared b.room in Wash., DC. Several rooms on a hallway and you walked to the bathroom door, as you would in someone's home. Lock the door... no streaking through the corridor naked! :-) Sometimes two doors on one bathroom so that each room can access the b.room. Usually these little inconveniences result in a less expensive room.

As Jefie pointed out, this is likely the case of a B&B set in a historic house. Usually, the bathroom is shared by two or three rooms max. If you give us the name of the hotel/B&B, we can tell you if it is a decent establishment.
